The dimension function \(\dim_L\) generated by a complex \(L\), introduced by Ščepin, is defined as the smallest integer \(n\) such that \(\varSigma^nL\in AE(X)\), where \(\varSigma^nL\) denotes the \(n\)th iterated suspension of \(L\). In this paper, the author also introduces the small and large inductive dimensions ind\(_L\) and Ind\(L\) generated by a complex and proves that \(\dim_L X= \) ind\(_L\,X= \) Ind\(_L\,X\) for any separable metrizable space \(X\). Furthermore, he gives the following three characterizations of \(\dim_L\): (1) Characterization of \(\dim_L\) in terms of partitions (Theorem 4.1), (2) Characterization of \(\dim_L\) in terms of mappings into cubes (Theorem 4.9), (3) Axiomatic characterization of \(\dim_L\) (Theorem 5.3). In dimension theory, it is important to investigate dimensional properties of unions, products and mappings. In this paper, the author obtains such properties for \(\dim_L\) by the Addition Theorem (Proposition 4.2), the Product Theorem (Proposition 4.5) and Hurewicz's Inequality (Proposition 4.7).
