For a complex semisimple algebraic group \(G\) and the corresponding Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}\) the author provides a geometric description of the characteristic of a nilpotent \(G\)-orbit in an arbitrary finite-dimensional rational \(G\)-module. In the case when the \(G\)-module \(\mathbb{V}\) is associated with a \(\mathbb{Z}_m\)-grading, it is shown that there are only finitely many nilpotent \(G\)-orbits in \(\mathbb{V}\), moreover different orbits have different characteristics. An example is given, which shows that for an arbitrary \(G\)-module \(\mathbb{V}\) with finitely many nilpotent \(G\)-orbits it may happen that different orbits have the same characteristic.
