Let \({\mathcal N}_2\) be the variety of all nilpotent groups of class at most two. In the paper analogues of \textit{B. J. Maier}'s characterization of weak and strong embeddability of amalgams in \({\mathcal N}_2\) [Publ. Math. 31, 57-70 (1984; Zbl 0543.20023); ibid. 33, 43-52 (1986; Zbl 0601.20040)] are proved for each subvariety of \({\mathcal N}_2\). Besides analogues of \textit{D. Saracino}'s characterization of weak and strong amalgamation bases for \({\mathcal N}_2\) [Algebra Univers. 16, 47-62 (1983; Zbl 0517.20016)]; the author's work on dominions [Commun. Algebra 28, No. 3, 1241-1270 (2000; Zbl 0955.20012)] and on amalgamation bases in some varieties of nil-2-groups [Algebra Univers. 42, No. 1/2, 61-77 (1999; Zbl 0983.20032); arXiv: GR/0006065] are also given. The results are obtained by extending the methods used by the authors cited.
