The paper is a contribution to the program of classification of infinite simple groups of finite Morley rank. The Cherlin-Zilber Conjecture says that any such group is algebraic over an algebraically closed field. The author works with groups of odd type, that is, the simple groups of finite Morley rank in which the connected components of Sylow 2-subgroups are nontrivial divisible Abelian groups. One of the main results about groups of odd type is Borovik's trichotomy theorem which claims that a minimal counterexample \(G\) of odd type either has one of two certain ``smallness'' properties, or contains an involution and \(O(C_G(i))\) is trivial for any involution \(i\). A.~Borovik proved this result under the assumption that \(G\) is tame, that is, does not interpret a bad field. The proof was based on the notion of signalizer functor borrowed from finite group theory. He showed that \(\theta(i):=O(C_G(i))\) is a signalizer functor, which is nilpotent under the tameness assumption, and, in the case when both of the smallness properties fail, \(\theta\) is trivial. The author shows how to obtain a connected nilpotent signalizer functor from any sufficiently nontrivial solvable signalizer functor; this allows to eliminate the tameness assumption from the trichotomy theorem. An important ingredient of the proof of the author's result on signalizers is a new notion of 0-unipotence in groups of finite Morley rank, which complements the usual notion of \(p\)-unipotence for prime \(p\).
