The author proves the existence of a conformal proper minimal immersion of the open unit disk into \(\mathbb{R}^3\). He obtains in this way a counterexample to a conjecture of Meeks and Sullivan. The procedure for the construction is quite intricate, but presented with careful attention to detail.
