The author develops an approach for prediction of transformation stresses and microstructures of stress-induced internally faulted martensite plates. Only the initial instant of transformation is considered. The additional free energy associated with stacking faults in the martensite is accounted and a simple model relating this energy to the stacking fault energy and to the stear magnitude due to stacking faults is proposed. These aspects of the micromechanics of internally faulted martensites are new.
