From authors' introduction: We present a general model of three-dimensional finite elements for the laser cladding, applying the adaptive mesh and adjusting the incident energy or the scanning speed of laser beam. In the analysis, Lagrangian description is used as the reference frame. Moving laser beam profile is referred to as a uniform or a Gaussian distribution. The thermo-physical properties of a material are allowed to vary with temperature and phase state of the material during simulation. The equation of nonlinear transient heat conduction problem is solved numerically by using finite element discretization and applying the modified Newton method as increment iterations for the nonlinear system. The model shall simulate properly the quasi-steady state of thermal fields in a process with time-dependent field variables, so the dilution control can be performed. For the aim of comparison an experiment of Nd:YAG laser cladding with wire feeding is performed.
