The author discusses axioms of Lie algebroids and presents a survey of the relevant results. Lie algebroids were first defined by Pradines as infinitesimal parts of differential groupoids and then extensively used (see for instance Nelson's book and the survey of Mackenzie). In this paper, the author proves that one of the axioms of Lie algebroids, namely the axiom telling that the anchor map induces a Lie algebra homomorphism is superfluous and that also the other assumptions can be weakened. In particular, it is shown that a Lie QD-algebroid is a Lie algebroid if the corresponding vector bundle \(E\) is of rank \(>1\), and a local Lie algebra in the sense of Kirillov if \(E\) is a line bundle. Finally, certain results on the axioms of Poisson and Jacobi brackets are also given.
