This comprehensive and consistent paper aims according to the authors ``to present the results of investigation of stress-strain state and self-heating of the viscoelastic finite cylinder under axial harmonic compression within a coupled problem of thermoviscoelasticity. The method of superposition is applied to calculate the distribution of stress and temperature [\textit{V. T. Grinchenko}, \textit{V. G. Karnaukhov} and \textit{I. K. Senchenkov}, Dopov. Akad. Nauk Ukr. RSR, Ser. A 1974, 252--255 (1974; Zbl 0278.73024)]. Methods of critical loads are presented''. The paper is systematized as follows: 1. Introduction; 2. Statement of the problem; 3. Construction of the solutiont; 4. Analysis of the infinite system; 5. Calculation of the stresses; 6. Compression stiffness; 7. Vibration heating; 8. Thermal instability; 9. Conclusions. The paper could be of interest to researchers in many fields of engineering where thermoplastic materials are widely used.
