Transverse vibration of axially moving strings are frequently encountered in engineering devices. Here, assuming that the transport speed is constant mean speed with small harmonic variations, the authors derive the governing nonlinear partial differential equation from Newton's second law. Using the method of multiple scales, they obtain closed-form solutions for the amplitude of vibrations, and establish conditions for existence of nontrivial steady-state response in \(2:1\) parametric resonance. Some numerical examples are presented.
