The Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence is the first sequence which relates the ordinary homology (with suitable coefficients) to the extraordinary homology. On a search for new and powerful generalizations, the authors in [\(K\)-theory 15, No. 3, 201--252 (1998; Zbl 0921.19003)] introduced abelian groups \(H^{\mathcal C}_n(X;E)\), where \(X\) is a contravariant functor from \({\mathcal C}\) with values in spaces, \(E\) is a covariant functor from \({\mathcal C}\) with values in spectra. For example, when \(X\) is constant, this gives the \(n\)th homotopy group of the homotopy colimit hocolim \(E\). The main goal of this paper is to construct a new spectral sequence which converges to \(H^{\mathcal C}_{p+q}(X;E)\). While the \(E^1\)-term looks extremely complicated, the authors relate it to Borel homology of the automorphisms of objects in \({\mathcal C}\) and the differentials are related to assembly maps \(H^{\mathcal B}_q(X,F^*E)\to H^{\mathcal C}_q(*;E)\), where \(F:{\mathcal B}\to {\mathcal C}\). There are many fascinating examples concerning the calculations of \(K\)-groups, the Baum-Connes conjecture, conjectures of Farrell and Jones, etc. Details are however too complex to be given here.
