A theory of algebraic cobordisms \(\Omega\) with good functorial properties was defined by the author and \textit{F. Morel} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I, Math. 332, 723--728 (2001; Zbl 0991.19001); ibid., 815--820 (2001; Zbl 1009.19002)] for smooth quasi-projective varieties only. The question of extending this theory to singular varieties remains open. In the present paper the author shows that extending directly this theory to Cohen-Macaulay varieties and local complete intersection morphisms doesn't preserve the functorial properties of fundamental classes. The example provided by the author is short and very explicit. Namely, he considers the cones of the rational normal curve \(V^1_4\), the Veronese surface \(V^2_2\) and the bi-Veronese surface \(V^{1,1}_{1,2}\) (all these are Cohen-Macaulay) and proves that if the respective fundamental classes are functorial with respect to l.c.i. morphisms, then the Chern numbers of \(V^1_4\) and \(V^2_2\) are the same, this yields a contradiction.
