A closed, bounded, convex subset \(C\) of a Banach space has the generic fixed point property for a class of mappings if every map from a closed convex subset of \(C\) into itself belonging to the class has a fixed point. In [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 93, 633--639 (1985; Zbl 0566.47039)], \textit{P. K. Lin} and \textit{Y. Sternfeld} showed that a convex set in a Banach space has the (generic) fixed point property for Lipschitzian mappings if and only if the set is compact. In the article under review, the authors relate weak compactness of closed, bounded, convex sets and the generic fixed point property for some classes of affine mappings. For example, the authors note that a closed, bounded, convex subset of a Banach space is weakly compact if and only if it has the generic fixed point property for continuous affine maps and they further note that, in some Banach spaces, it is possible to replace the class of continuous, affine maps by a smaller class of affine maps. To be specific, the authors characterize the weakly compact sets in \(c_0(\Gamma)\) and in generalized James's quasireflexive spaces \(J_p\), \(1<p<\infty\), in terms of the generic fixed point property for affine mappings that are uniformly Lipschitzian. The authors also prove that a nonempty, closed, bounded, convex subset of an \(L\)-embedded Banach space is weakly compact if and only if it has the generic fixed point property for nonexpansive affine maps. For some related results, the interested reader may want to look at the following articles of \textit{P. N. Dowling}, \textit{C. J. Lennard} and the reviewer [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 49A, No. 1, 141--145 (2002; Zbl 1008.47053), Stud. Math. 154, No. 3, 277--293 (2003; Zbl 1037.47039), Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 132, No. 6, 1659--1666 (2004; Zbl 1057.47064)].
