The authors present a new way to determine the functions of the known class \(S\) for which the maximum of \(\{\arg f ^\prime (r) :f \in S\}\) is attained, where \(r \in (0,1)\) is fixed. The sharp estimates for \(| \)arg \(f ^\prime (z)| \) were given by \textit{G. M. Goluzin} [Rec. Math. Moscou, n. Ser. 1, 293--296 (1936; Zbl 0015.07104)] and by \textit{I. E. Bazilevich} [Rec. Math. Moscou, n. Ser. 1, 283--291 (1936; Zbl 0015.07103)]. The extremal functions with respect to the maximum of arg \(f ^\prime (r)\) can be characterized by means of the Löwner differential equation \[ {d \zeta \over d \tau} = -\zeta \cdot {\mu (\tau)+\zeta \over \mu (\tau)-\zeta}. \] Here \(\mu =\mu (\tau )\) denotes a piecewise continuous function with a modulus equal to unity. The authors call the functions \(\mu = \mu (\tau )\) associated with the above extremal functions via the Löwner differential equation extremal control functions. Starting from this new definition they determine such extremal control functions. In case of \(0<r \leq \sqrt{1/2}\) they find one extremal control function. In the other case (i.e. \( \sqrt{1/2}<r<1\)) there are at least two extremal control functions. In both cases these extremal control functions lead to the mappings for which equality occurs in the estimate of \(| \)arg \(f ^\prime (r)| \). Unfortunately, the paper contains some misprints in the formulas.
