Let \(\{w_{n}(x)\}_{n = 0}^{+\infty} \) be the Walsh--Paley system which is orthonormal on the segment \([0,1]\). The author proves the following theorem. Theorem. There exists a function \(f \in L[0,1]\) such that its modulus of continuity \(\omega (\delta ,f)_{L}\) in the metric of the space \(L[0,1]\) satisfies the condition \(\omega (\delta ,f)_{L} = O((\log {{1}\over{\delta}})^{-1/2})\) as \(\delta \to + 0\) and the Walsh-Fourier series \(\sum\limits_{n=0}^{+\infty} (f,w_{n})\,w_{n} (x) \) of the function \(f\) diverges almost everywhere on \([0,1]\). Remark of the reviewer: The formulation of the theorem in the English translation contains an error: instead of the word ``converges'' it must be ``diverges''.
