From the introducction: Many methods for a numerical solution of boundary value problems involve the truncation of an unbounded domain and the construction of artificial boundary conditions (ABCs) on the newly formed surfaces. The accuracy of the resulting approximation is predetermined by the choice of ABCs, but the construction of appropriate ABCs, especially completely precise ones, requires detailed, frequently unavailable information. We propose a new simple approach to the construction of ABCs that ensure high-order accurate approximations. Specifically, repeated differentiation is used to produce second-order ABCs satisfying the following main principle: the problem in the truncated domain is uniquely solvable, and its variational statement generates a positive definite quadratic form.
