The article contains the following generalization of a structure theorem for Kähler groups [see \textit{D. Arapura} and \textit{M. Nori}, Compositio Math. 116, 173--188 (1999; Zbl 0971.14020) and \textit{F. Campana}, J. Algebraic Geom. 10, 599--622 (2001)]: Let \(G\) be the fundamental group of a compact Kähler manifold with a solvable quotient group \(H=G/F\) of finite rank and assume that \(F\) does not admit a surjection onto an infinitely generated free group. Then there are normal subgroups \(H_2\subset H_1\) of \(H\) such that \(H/H_1\) is finite, \(H_1/H_2\) is nilpotent and \(H_2\) is a torsion group. If, under the above conditions, the group \(H\) is an extension of an abelian group \(B\) by an abelian group \(A\) with \(Q\otimes A\) a finite dimensional vector space, then all eigencharacters of the conjugate action of \(B\) on \(Q\otimes A\) are torsion characters. An essential tool for the proof of these results is the following theorem which is interesting in itself: Let \(f:M\to C\) be a surjective holomorphic map with connected fibers of a compact Kähler manifold \(M\) onto a Riemann surface \(C\) of genus \(g\geq 1\) and \(f_*:\pi_1(M)\to \pi_1(C)\) the induced homomorphism of the fundamental groups. Let \(T_2\subset \text{GL}(2,\mathbb C)\) be the subgroup of upper trigonal matrices with \(a_{22}=1\) and \(p:T_2\to\mathbb C^*\) the natural surjection. Assume that \(p\circ\rho\in\Hom(\pi_1(M),\mathbb C^*)\) can be factorized over \(f_*\) but Ker\(f_{*}\nsubseteq\operatorname {Ker}\rho\). Then \((p\circ\rho)(\pi_1(M))\) is a torsion group.
