A degenerate elliptic operator \(A =\alpha(x) \Delta u(x)\) on a bounded smooth open set \(\Omega\) in \(R^N\) with nonlinear boundary conditions \((D_\nu u)_{| \partial \Omega} = -\beta(u_{| \partial \Omega})\) is considered. Here \(\alpha\) is a continuous function positive on \(\Omega\), possibly vanishing in \(\partial \Omega\), \(D_\nu u_{| \partial \Omega}\) is the derivative with respect to the outer normal, \(\beta\) is a nondecreasing Lipschitz continuous (in one dimensional case continuous) function. The authors prove that the realization \(A_p\) of the operator \(A\) with such boundary conditions in a suitable weighted \(L^p\) space is m-dissipative, where \(p \in (1,\infty)\) is arbitrary or \(p=2\) in the case \(N=1\) or \(N>1\), respectively. Consequently, \(A_p\) generates a nonlinear semigroup in the space under consideration. Moreover, \(A_p\) is a densely defined and closed operator.
