Motivated by the classical Krein's theorem on weak compactness of the closed convex hull of a weakly compact set, the authors say that a bounded subset \(M\) of a Banach space \(X\) is \(\varepsilon\)-weakly relatively compact (\(\varepsilon\)-WRC) if \(\overline{M}^{w^*}\subset X+\varepsilon B_{X^{**}}\). \textit{A. S. Granero} [An extension of the Krein-Šmulian theorem. Preprint] has proved that for every \(\varepsilon\)-WRC set \(M\) its convex hull \(\text{co}M\) is \(2\varepsilon\)-WRC. In a large class of Banach spaces, e.g., in WCG spaces, we can put in this statement \(\varepsilon\)-WRC instead of \(2\varepsilon\)-WRC (see \textit{M. Fabian, P. Hájek, V. Montesinos} and \textit{V. Zizler} [Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana, to appear] and \textit{A. S. Granero} [loc. cit.]). However, relying on the continuum hypothesis, an example is shown in [ibid.] of a space \(X\) and a bounded subset \(M\subset X\) such that \(M\) is \(\frac{1}{2}\)-WRC and \(\text{co}M\) is not \(\varepsilon\)-WRC for any \(\varepsilon <1\). In the paper under review, the authors show that a similar set \(M\) can be constructed in any Banach space \(X\) containing \(l_{\infty}\) (in some equivalent norm) without using CH.
