Let \(G\) be a connected reductive group defined over a field of positive characteristic \(p\). The (restricted) Springer correspondence is a map from the set of unipotent conjugacy classes of \(G\) to the set of irreducible complex characters of the Weyl group \(W\). (In the unrestricted Springer correspondence one also considers a twist by a local system on the conjugacy class.) The authors now consider the (restricted) Springer correspondence for the case of a disconnected reductive group which is obtained by adjoining to \(G\) an automorphism \(\sigma\) of finite order. The unipotent classes they wish to consider are those in the coset \(G\sigma\). So \(\sigma\) should have an order that is a power of \(p\), to have any unipotent class in the coset. The characters will now be characters of the Weyl group \(W^\sigma\) consisting of fixed points in \(W\). Compare [\textit{K. Sorlin}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 568, 197-234 (2004; Zbl 1046.20034)]. First reductions are given that lead to two exceptional cases and to the `classical' cases where \(p=2\) and \(G\) is of type \(A_\ell\) or \(D_\ell\) and \(\sigma\) is a graph automorphism of order two. In these classical cases the Springer correspondence is then determined using [\textit{N. Spaltenstein}, Classes unipotentes et sous-groupes de Borel, Lect. Notes Math. 946. Berlin-Heidelberg-New York: Springer-Verlag (1982; Zbl 0486.20025)].
