Injectivity of the symmetric map for line bundles (Q1434245)

Let \(C\) be a general smooth curve of genus \(g\). The author proves that for every \(L\in \text{Pic}^d(C)\) with \(d \leq g+1\) the symmetric product map \(\sigma _L: S^2(H^0(C,L)) \to H^0(C,L^2)\) is injective. She also proves that the bound is sharp: for every even \(g \geq 4\) and any general \(C\) she constructs a degree \(g+2\) line bundle \(L\) such that \(\sigma _L\) is not injective.
