Let \(N\) be an \(H\)-type group and let \(S=NA\) be a one-dimensional solvable extension of \(N\). Let \({\widehat f}(\lambda, Y, Z) \) stand for the Helgason Fourier transform of a function \(f\) on \(S\) and let \(h_{\alpha}\) denote the heat kernel associated to the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The author proves the following analogue of Hardy's theorem: Theorem. Let \(f\) be a function on \(S=NA\) which satisfies the estimate \(|f(x)| \leq c h_{\alpha}(x)\) for all \(x \in S\). Further assume that \[ \int_{N} |{\widehat f}(\lambda, Y, Z)|^{2}(1+|Z|^{2})^{\gamma} \,dY\,dZ \leq c e^{-2\beta\lambda^{2}} \] for \(\lambda \in {\mathbb R}\) where \(\gamma > \frac{k-1}{2}\) , \(k\) being the dimension of the centre of \(N\). Then \(f=0\), or \(f=c h_{\alpha}\) depending on whether \(\alpha < \beta\) or \(\alpha = \beta\). The author also proves a stronger version of Hardy's theorem and a Paley-Wiener theorem. These are generalizations of the corresponding results for rank one symmetric spaces of noncompact type.
