Es wird eine kurze Übersicht über die Verhältnisse an den Schottischen Universitäten gegeben, beginnend mit St. Andrews (1411), und das Erziehungs- und Unterrichtssystem im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert geschildert. Ausführlicher wird auf Napier und sein Werk, insbesondere auf die aus der Trigonometrie hervorgegangene Definition seiner Logarithmen eingegangen. Es folgen James Gregory und seine beiden Neffen David und James Gregory (``secundus''). Der Bericht schließt mit dem Todesjahr des letzteren (1742).
