Der vorliegende Band ist aus Vorlesungen, die Verf. am Rice Institute und an der Universität Chicago in den Jahren 1924/25 gehalten hat, hervorgegangen. Die Darstellung ist aus früheren Veröffentlichungen des Verf., besonders aus der Abhandlung ``Fundamental points of potential theory'' (The Rice Institute Pamphlet 7 (1920), 262-329; F. d. M. 48, 1268), sowie aus einigen, z. T. gemeinsam mit H. E. Bray veröffentlichten C. R.-Noten (1923; F. d. M. 44, 339 (JFM 44.0339.*)) erwachsen.
