Selektion ist gegenüber Mutation einflußlos, wenn die relative Häufigkeit der Mutation größer ist als der Selektionskoeffizient. Somit bestimmt die Mutation die Entwicklung in bezug auf Faktoren, deren Vorteil oder Nachteil vernachlässigt werden kann. Ihre Resultate sind nur dann wichtig, wenn ihre Häufigkeit sehr groß ist.
