\textit{Robert Adrain} wurde 1775 in Irland geboren und kam 1798 nach Amerika, wo er später verschiedene Professuren bekleidete. Er starb 1843. Er machte verschiedene Ansätze zur Herausgabe mathematischer Zeitschriften. Bemerkenswert ist seine Priorität in der Entdeckung des Fehlergesetzes, wenn auch sein Beweis große Mängel aufweist.
