Eine partielle Differentialgleichung zweiter Ordnung sei in der Form \[ r = f (x, y, z, p, q, s, t) \] gegeben. Es wird \[ t=\varPhi (x, y, z, p, q, s, \lambda ) \] gesetzt, wobei \(\varPhi\) eine Lösung der gewöhnlichen Differentialgleichung \[ \frac {\partial\varPhi}{\partial s}\left\{\frac {\partial f}{\partial s}+\frac {\partial f}{\partial \varPhi}\;\frac {\partial \varPhi}{\partial s}\right\}=1 \] ist. Dann sind \(r, t\) und \(s\) bekannte Funktionen in \(x, y, z, p, q, \lambda;\) für \(\lambda\) erhält man eine sehr komplizierte Differentialgleichung mit den unabhängigen Variablen \(x, y, z, p, q,\) welche aber in den zweiten Differentialquotienten linear ist.
