In manchen Fällen kann man aus einem vollständigen Integral einer partiellen Differentialgleichung zweiter Ordnung, d. h. einem solchen, das fünf willkürliche Konstanten enthält, die allgemeine Lösung erhalten; ein solches Beispiel ist \[ \varPhi(r, s, t, p - rx- sy,\;q- sx- ty,\;2z - 2px- 2qy + rx^2 + 2s xy + ty^2) = 0, \] wo \(\varPhi\) eine willkürliche funktionale Form ist. Dies wird näher begründet.
