Als Kontinuante bezeichnet \textit{Sylvester} eine Determinante der Form \[ \left|\begin{matrix} \;a_1 & \;b_1 & 0 & 0 \\ -1 & \;a_2 & \;b_2 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 & \;a_3 & \;b_3 \\ 0 & 0 & -1 & \;a_4 \end{matrix}\right| \,. \] Der Verf. untersucht die Determinanten, auf welche man kommt, wenn man die \textit{Hessesche} Form einer Kontinuante bildet (vergl. vorst. Ref., siehe JFM 32.0164.01).
