Es wird gewöhnlich angegeben, dass das Zeichen \(\pi\) erst 1748 in Euler's ``Introductio in analysin infinitorum'' angewandt worden ist. Herr Eneström bemerkt, dass diese Notiz nicht ganz exact ist, da Euler das fragliche Zeichen schon in einer Abhandlung aus dem Jahre 1737 benutzt, und Goldbach 1742 vom Symbol \(\pi\) als von einer damals geläufigen Bezeichnung spricht.
