A generalized symmetric space of order \(m\) is a homogeneous space \(G/H\) where \(G\) is a compact connected semisimple Lie group, \(H\subset G\) is a closed subgroup and there is an automorphism \(\theta\) of order \(m\) of \(G\) satisfying \(G^\theta_0\leq H\leq G^\theta\), where \(G^\theta\) is the fixed point set of \(\theta\) and \(G^\theta_0\) is the identity component. The explicit computation of the rational homotopy groups of an homogeneous space is a very hard problem. In this paper, starting with the classification of finite order automorphisms of semisimple Lie algebras, the author gives a list of all the existing generalized symmetric spaces and computes in each case the rational homotopy groups. This paper contains a list of interesting examples of models of homogeneous spaces.
