The authors use bifurcation theory to perform an incremental finite element analysis of puckering initiation and growth in the metal sheet during the forming process. The finite element formulation is based on incremental deformation theory and on the elastoplastic material modeling. The effect of plastic anisotropy on the compressive instability is investigated for a square plate subjected to compression in one direction and tension in the other direction, and also for a spherical cup. The results of analysis indicate that the puckering behaviour of sheet metal is largely affected by plastic anisotropy.
