If one considers additively commutative semirings with absorbing zero as generalized (associative) rings for which the additive group is merely a semigroup, it is natural to ask whether it is possible to define the concepts of radical classes, radical operators and semisimple classes for those semirings in such a way that the well known results arise if these concepts are applied to the subclass of all rings. The author gives a positive answer to this question by defining each of these three basic concepts in an appropriate way for semirings. Moreover, it is shown that all three concepts yield the same Kurosh-Amitsur radical theory for semirings. As a further important result the A-D-S-property (which was shown for rings by Anderson, Divinsky and Sulinski) is proved: each radical \(\varrho(A)\) of an ideal \(A\) of a semiring \(S\) is itself an ideal of \(S\). This implies that each semisimple class is hereditary, and it also yields a necessary and sufficient condition for a radical class to be hereditary.
