Let \(A\) be a commutative Banach algebra with unit. Denote by \(X_A\), the Gelfand spectrum of \(A\). By definition, a global holomorphic functional calculus for \(A\) is a continuous homomorphism \(\theta_A :{\mathcal O}(X_A) \to A\) such that \(\theta_A({\hat a})=a\) for all \(a\in A\), where \({\hat a}\) denotes the Gelfand transform of \(a\). The main purpose of the article under review is to prove the uniqueness of the global holomorphic functional calculus and its compatibility with Banach algebra homomorphisms. The authors apply this compatibility to define a global functional calculus for commutative, complete locally \(m\)-convex algebras.
