A necessary condition for the existence of a differential substitution which transforms the solutions of the equation \(u_{xy}= F(x,y,u,u_x, u_y)\) into solutions of a linear equation \(w_{xy}+ \alpha(x,y) w_x+ \beta(x, y) w_y+ w(x,y)= 0\) is given: It is proved that if such a substitution exists and has \(x\)-order equal with \(k\), then the \(x\)-order of the Laplace \(x\)-invariants of the original equation cannot exceed \(k\). (The \(x\)-order of a function \(f\) depending on \(x\), \(y\), \(u\), \((\partial^i_x u)_{i\leq k}\) and \((\partial^j_y u)_{j\leq l}\) is equal to \(k\).) The translation into English of the original paper contains some errors: for example in the eighth line of the translation instead ``vanish'' one must read ``are excluded''.
