The centered maximal function of a given real valued and measurable function on \({\mathbb R}^+=(0,\infty)\) is defined by \((M_cf)(x)=\sup_{0<t\leq x} \{(2t)^{-1}\int_{x-t}^{x+t} |f(y)|dy\}.\) The main purpose here is to determine the weights \(u\) and \(v\) on \({\mathbb R}^+\) for which \(M_c\) is bounded from the weighted Lebesgue space \(L^p(v)=L^p({\mathbb R}^+,v(y) dy)\) to \(L^p(u)\) for \(1<p<\infty\). That is for some constant \(C>0\) \[ \int_{{\mathbb R}^+}(M_cf)^p(x)u(x) dx\leq C \int_{{\mathbb R}^+}|f(y)|^pv(y) dy \quad \text{for all functions }f\in L^p(v). \tag{*} \] A weak version of inequality (*), for which the left member is replaced by \[ \sup_{\lambda>0}\Biggl\{\lambda^p \int_{\{x;\;(M_cf)(x)>\lambda\}}u (x) dx \Biggr\}, \] is also investigated by the authors whenever \(1\leq p<\infty\). For \({\mathbb R}^+\) and \(M_c\), respectively, replaced by \({\mathbb R}\) and the usual Hardy-Littlewood maximal function, the boundedness as in \((*)\) and its weak version were solved by many authors as E. Sawyer, F. Martin-Reyes, P. Ortega Salvador and A. de la Torre. Restricting the domain from \({\mathbb R}\) to \({\mathbb R}^+\) introduces a number of technical difficulties which are overcome by the authors and motivates their paper. To get \((*)\), the authors make use of simplification and adaptation of a standard argument due to E. Sawyer. And to prove the weak boundedness, they reduce the problem in finding weights which govern weak-type inequalities for some restricted one-sided maximal functions associated with \(M_c\).
