Let \(R\) be a local noetherian ring of dimension \(d\) over a perfect field \(k\) of characteristic \(p>0\). In the case where \(R\) is graded \textit{C. Szpiro} and \textit{L. Peskine} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. A 278, 1421-1424 (1974; Zbl 0281.13004)] have shown that a module \(M\) of finite length and finite projective dimension over \(R\) satisfies \(\ell(F^n (M))= p^{nd}\ell (M)\), where \(F^n\) denotes the \(n\)-th iteration of the Frobenius functor. In this paper the authors construct a module of finite length and finite projective dimension over a non-graded Gorenstein ring \(R\) of dimension 5 for which this equality does not hold. Previously such examples were known only for Cohen-Macaulay rings [see \textit{P. Roberts}, Publ. Math. Sci. Res. Inst. 15, 417-436 (1989; Zbl 0734.13009)]. The authors' construction is based on a new example of modules with negative Serre intersection multiplicity.
