Let \(\Sigma\) be a closed oriented surface, and let \(\mathcal D\) be the group of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of \(\Sigma\). Let \(P=\Sigma\times K\) be the trivial principal fiber bundle over \(\Sigma\), where \(K\) is a connected compact Lie group. Let \(\mathcal A\) be the space of \(K\)-connections on the trivial bundle \(P\) and let \(\mathcal C\) be the space of gauge-equivalent classes of connections. There exists a non-trivial \(\mathcal D\)-equivariant Hermitian line bundle \(\mathcal L\) over \(\mathcal C\) with the natural action of the group \(\mathcal D\) on the space \(\Omega^0({\mathcal L})\). The goal of the present paper is to understand whether, in the simplest case \(K=\mathbb T\), a submodule of this natural action can be unitarized. The author proves that the answer to this question is negative, which means that the action is not unitarizable. In order to prove this the author introduces an \({\mathcal S}\)-diff-equivariant regularization and shows the existence of the limit as the regularization is removed.
