Principal manifolds are defined as the critical points of the distance functional and it is proved that they are never local minima. As a consequence it is shown that the manifold fitting problem cannot be solved by finding an embedding that approximates the submanifold in the sense of least squares, when the data set in modeled by a probability distribution.
