This work demonstrates that B-splines can be effectively used as basis functions in the finite element method. An application to solving elliptic boundary value problems is discussed. The advantages of B-splines over the traditional fundamental functions are mentioned. Results of numerical experiments for two model problems are presented. B-splines are applied to solve nonlinear problems of calculating the stress-strain state of axisymmetric rubber-metallic articles.
