The pole assignment problem for single-input linear time-invariant systems with delay argument is considered. A control law in the form of a feedback of phase coordinates and their prehistory is found such that the closed-loop system has characteristic equation with prescribed coefficients. It is shown that for the canonical system the unknown parameters can be computed by making equal the coefficients of exponential polynomials of the same degree. For the general system a linear transformation is used first and then it is shown that the equating of the coefficients requires an additional compatibility condition. The feedback coefficients are provided in an explicit form.
