Following the work of \textit{J. E. Pečarić} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 161, No. 2, 395-404 (1991; Zbl 0753.26006)], the author considers positive linear functionals on a class of non-negative functions, with \(A, A(1) = 1\), and shows that if \(f,g\) are monotonic in the same sense then \(A(fg) \geq A(f) A(g)\), the opposite inequality holding if the functions are monotonic in opposite senses. Next, the author considers the ratio \( \displaystyle F(f,g) = {{f_0g_0-A(fg)}\over{(f_0-A(f))(g_0-A(g))}}\), where \(f_0, g_0\) are non-negative real numbers. The main result here is that if \(A(f)\geq 0, A(g)\geq 0, f_0-A(f)\geq 0, g_0-A(g)\geq 0\), where \(f\) and \(g\) are monotonic in opposite sense, then \(F(f,g)\geq 1\). A counterexample is given to show that if \(f\) and \(g\) are monotonic in the same sense the opposite inequality need not hold. In addition, the author obtains exact upper and lower bounds for \(F(f,g)\) on certain classes of bounded functions \(f,g\).
