The authors determine the positive integers \(n\) for which there exists a finite solvable group \(G\) and two non-conjugate subgroups of \(G\) of index \(n\) that induce the same permutation character. They prove that such \(n\) are simply those for which there exist prime numbers \(p,q,r\) with \(pqr\mid n\) and \(p\mid q(q-1)\). The authors also investigate the set of all \(n\) when \(G\) is no longer assumed to be solvable, and extend some results obtained by \textit{R. M. Guralnick} and \textit{D. B. Wales} [J. Algebra 96, 94-113 (1985; Zbl 0577.20005)]. Reviewer's remark: The paper by \textit{N. Gavioli} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 349, No. 7, 2969-2980 (1997; Zbl 0872.20005)] investigates a related question.
