The author considers an index integral transformation using Bessel functions as kernels. It was introduced and studied by \textit{E. C. Titchmarsh} [Eigenfunction expansions associated with second-order differential equations (1946; Zbl 0061.13505)] as an example of a continuous spectrum Bessel-function expansions in Sturm-Liouville boundary value problems. Later in the second edition of his book (1962; Zbl 0099.05201), he corrected his expansion by adding an additional term, which contains a combination of an integral and series. In this paper the Titchmarsh formula is simplified so as to contain just integrals with Bessel and Lommel functions as kernels, which generate a pair of Titchmarsh integral transformations. By using the composition properties of the Titchmarsh transform and its relationship with the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform, \(L_p\)-properties of the Titchmarsh transform are investigated and inversion theorems are proved. The question of the correctness of Titchmarsh's formulas is completely closed by the discussion presented in this paper. Some closely related recent works on the subject of index integral transformations include, for example, those by the reviewer, \textit{Yu. V. Vasil'ev} and \textit{S. B. Yakubovich} [Q. J. Math., Oxf. II. Ser. 49, No. 195, 375-394 (1998; Zbl 0912.44004)] and the reviewer, \textit{Vu Kim Tuan} and \textit{S. B. Yakubovich} [The Cherry transform and its relationship with a singular Sturm-Liouville problem, ibid. 51, 371-383 (2000)].
