This work can be considered as a current contribution to considerable effort which has been devoted to the revival of the fortunes of process control. A set of advanced nonlinear model-based multivariable control and optimization algorithms is developed which is implementable in complex industrial applications, such as processes found in petroleum refinery. The book covers many topics. In review chapters the recent trends in the development of control systems in processing industry together with related applications are highlighted and the nonlinear generic model control (GMC) methodology is selected for further research, design, and applications. GMC is interpreted as an approach for process analysis, control, and optimization where the same process model is used at each stage. The emphasis is laid on the derivation of a special GMC framework which integrates a general process model, an inferential model, and modern strategies of predictive control. The body of the book is formed by four chapters which expose in detail the control systems derived for numerous subprocesses of debutanization, crude distillation, catalytic reforming, and fluid catalytic cracking. A realistic and accurate inferential model for every outlined process is elaborated and successfully inserted into the specialization of the general nonlinear multivariable GMC framework. The models are based on correlation techniques combined with the fundamental chemical engineering principles and the experience of plant operation. All control algorithms and models are built up and analyzed with \(\text{MATLAB}^{\circledR}/ \text{SIMULINK}^{\circledR}\). It is emphasized that the implementation of the proposed models and algorithms in real plants has demonstrated an improved control performance over conventional control. Incorporation of inferential models provides the process operators with accurate predictions without time delays caused by the analysers, helps to achieve less quality giveaway and get higher yield. The book is largely self-contained. It may be useful for the academic control community; also it can serve as a concise reference for technicians interested in the application of nonlinear process control theory related to the petroleum refining industry.
