The authors investigate an active control of a piezoelectric laminated circular spherical shallow shell. Piezoelectric layers are uniformly distributed on the top and the bottom surfaces of the shell. The authors derive the governing hyperbolic nonlinear system of von Kármán type for deflection \(w\) and for the stress function \(N_r^m\). A semi-analytic approach is applied to find a solution. The functions \(w(r,t)\) and \(N_r^m(r,t)\) are decomposed into the sums corresponding to static and dynamic parts. The static pair \(\{w_0(r),\;N_{r0}^m\}\) is a solution of the von Kármán-like nonlinear system. These power series are then applied to the problem numerically. The results show that the nonlinear deformation and natural frequencies can be actively controlled by means of high control voltages. Finally, the authors investigate the effect of large amplitude on the vibrating frequency by using Galerkin method and Krylov-Bogolyubov-Mitropolski perturbation method.
