The paper is concerned with incompressible surfaces in and homology of ramified coverings of closed 3-manifolds. It is proven that, roughly, all ramified coverings of a surgery manifold contain an embedded incompressible surface provided that the surgery parameters are big enough. The quasi-Fuchsian group technique is essentially used. Also the 3-manifold class field theory, developed by the author in [Sel. Math., New Ser. 3, No. 3, 361-399 (1997; Zbl 0892.57012)], is extended to the case of ramified coverings of 3-manifolds.
