For part I see M. Hanamura, Math. Res. Lett. 2, No. 6, 811-821 (1995; Zbl 0867.14003). In this third part of the author's series of articles on mixed motives and algebraic cycles, the author applies his previous constructions to another crucial conjecture in the theory of motives, namely to the conjecture of the existence of the so-called ``abelian category of mixed motives over a field \(k\)''. Starting from the triangulated category \({\mathfrak D}(k)\) of mixed motives, which has been constructed and described in part II of this article series, the author derives a new category \(M{\mathfrak M}(k)\) that can be seen as a candidate for the conjectured abelian category of mixed motives over an arbitrary field \(k\). In \(\S 1\) the basic properties of the category \({\mathfrak D}(k)\) from part II (preprint) are briefly recalled and systematically compiled. Then, in \S 2, the various ``standard conjectures'' of Grothendieck, Murre, and Soulé-Beilinson on Chow groups and \(K\)-groups of smooth projective varieties, together with their conjunctions and implications on the category of pure motives are discussed and applied to derive some according ``extended standard conjectures'' for the author's triangulated category \({\mathfrak D}(k)\) of mixed motives. Finally, in \S 3, the author shows that, under the assumption of the validity of these extended standard conjectures, the triangulated category \({\mathfrak D}(k)\) carries a natural motivic \(t\)-structure (in the sense of Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne), the cohomological heart \(M{\mathfrak M}(k)\) of which is an abelian category satisfying the axioms for the conjectured abelian category of mixed motives.
