The author studies the existence and uniqueness of complete noncompact embedded convex hypersurfaces in \({\mathbb{R}}^{n+1}\) moving homothetically with a normal velocity equal, pointwise, to a negative power of the Gauss curvature: \(V=K^{- \alpha}\), \(\alpha >0.\) If \(\alpha \geq 1/n\), it is shown that no such hypersurface exists. A complete classification is provided for the remaining cases: for every \(\alpha \in (0, 1/n)\) and every geodesically convex open proper subset \(\Gamma\) of \({\mathbb{S}}^n\), there is a unique (up to homothety) complete noncompact embedded convex hypersurface in \({\mathbb{R}}^{n+1}\) moving homothetically by the \(K^{- \alpha}\) flow and its Gauss image is \(\Gamma.\) In contrast to the flow by some positive power of the Gauss curvature [considered by the author in a preceding paper, Math. Ann. 311, 251-274 (1998; Zbl 0910.53043)] where a class of translating solutions was found, the \(K^{- \alpha}\) flow (\(\alpha >0\)) does not admit any complete noncompact convex hypersurface moving by translation.
