Subdivision schemes are efficient recursive methods to create curves and surfaces. In this paper, a new bivariate subdivision scheme is presented based on two nonbox-spline generators of a four-directional spline space. A four-directional mesh is generated by the lines \(x=i\) and \(y=k\) \((i,k\) integers) adding both diagonals to each square. At least for piecewise linear, continuous splines and for piecewise cubic, continuously differentiable splines there is given a very efficient nontensor product subdivision scheme converging to a corresponding spline surface. The subdivision schemes are associated with a matrix mask of small support. Furthermore, some results on related quasi-interpolating operators, and on the approximation order of the underlying shift-invariant spaces are presented.
